Customize A Flow's Follow-Up Sequence

At the end of every single Flow (i.e. the moment when someone officially submits a Flow), Nucleus provides helpful prompts and messaging for people (such as entering their email address or password to either sign into, or to create, their personal Nucleus account).

What these prompts and messaging are is completely up to you! Nucleus provides a default, easy "Thank You" Page and Receipt Email that works great if you're in a pinch and don't have the time to make any customizations to it.

But if you have the time, it can be advantageous to curate unique prompts and messaging directly following the submission of any Flow. That way, each Flow contains a thoroughly distinct follow-up sequence and points people in the best direction. (You can even set up a single follow-up email tied to each Flow you create!)

Even more, if you're subscribed to Nucleus Messages, you can create the ultimate follow-up sequence after the submission of a Flow! We'll explore the customizations possible directly in Flows, and then briefly expand into Messages to showcase the follow-up capabilities there.

To begin, click the Nucleus logo in the top left corner and select Flows from the dropdown menu. Click here for a quick link. Then select a specific Flow to Manage.

In this guide, we'll cover the following topics. Click on any one to jump ahead.

The Standard "Thank You" Page

By default, the standard default "Thank You" message for any Flow created from scratch will have the following title and message:

Thank you!

We're so blessed you've taken this next step with our church family. You are loved and we thank the Lord for you.

All Flows created from a template will have their own default "Thank You" message according to what information that Flow aims to gather.

Either way, you can always customize the default, easy "Thank You" message of any Flow.

To do this, while on the Create option in the left sidebar of a Flow, select Thank You Page.

While Easy (default) is still selected, click on the Title and Message fields and customize the text, staying within the character limit for each.

Next, it's important to know when someone will see this messaging. After the submission of any Flow, people will be presented with one of the four following pages/messages. Depending on the sign-in state of that person will determine which page/messaging they receive.

Note: If you'd rather take control of what someone sees after they submit a Flow, you can choose Advanced and curate the same "Thank You" Page no matter what sign-in state they are in. Click here to skip ahead on those options.

Not Signed In. No Contact Info Provided.

If a Flow doesn't have a Smart Contact step, it's possible for someone to complete a Flow without providing their email address. As such, Nucleus tries to obtain the person's email address for three reasons:

  1. To send that person a digital record of their submission.
  2. To properly assign this submission to that person's personal My Nucleus account.
  3. To begin the creation process of a My Nucleus account if the email address provided here is not yet in the Nucleus database.

So the prompt in this state will be to enter an email address so that person can obtain a digital receipt. In this instance, the "Thank You" message is overridden by the "Get a Receipt" message.

Not Signed In. Email Address Provided. Password Not Created.

Should someone provide their email address in the Flow (i.e. if the Smart Contact step is enabled on the Flow), Nucleus will showcase your "Thank You" message for the Flow as well as prompt the person to enter a password.

By creating a password, this person would be able to then login to their personal My Nucleus account to manage their past submissions and their profile information.

Not Signed In. Email Address Provided. Account Previously Created.

Should someone provide their email address in the Flow (i.e. the Smart Contact step is enabled on the Flow), and this person has previously created a password (thus successfully creating a personal My Nucleus account), Nucleus will prompt them to enter their password upon completing a Flow.

By entering their password, they will be signed into The Launcher, making it easier to fill out any other Flow. This is because whenever you're signed into The Launcher, Nucleus can pull your profile information into any Flow, making it faster to complete any personal information steps in a Flow.

Signed In.

By default, even if someone completes a Flow without providing their email address (i.e. if the Flow doesn't have the Smart Contact step), if someone is signed into The Launcher, Nucleus will automatically link that submission with their personal My Nucleus account.

As such, there isn't any need to prompt them to sign in or to create their account. In this instance, Nucleus will showcase your Flow's "Thank You" message.

The Standard Receipt Email

By default, Nucleus will send a digital receipt to anyone who completes a Flow who also provides their email address.

This receipt simply includes a notice that they completed that particular Flow with the ability to view their submission details by logging into their personal My Nucleus account. Below is an example of this email:

If you'd like to include any additional message in this email (or if you'd like to toggle this email off entirely), you can! Click here to skip down to that section.

Customize The "Thank You" Page - Advanced

If you have the time and want to control exactly what prompts and messaging someone sees the moment they complete a Flow, choosing the Advanced "Thank You" Page is the option for you!

While on the Create option in the left sidebar of a Flow, select Thank You Page. Then choose Advanced.

Here, you'll see 5 distinct types of information you can choose to display:

  • Headline (Title) - Required
  • Message (Description)
  • Call-to-Action (CTA's)
  • Helper Text + Link(s)
  • My Account Prompt (Sign in / Sign up)

By default, all of these options are selected. To deselect any of them, simply click on them to remove the checkmark. (And do the same to reselect them.)

Below these options, you can then edit each one that is selected.

Headline (Title) & Message (Description)

Just like with the Easy (Default) "Thank You" Message, you can customize the title and message here in the Advanced version.

Call-to-Action (CTA's)

Below this, you can adjust your Call-to-Actions. Keeping the Standard (Default) selection will show two options:

  • A prompt to view your submissions in your personal My Nucleus account.
  • A prompt to fill out the Flow again.

But if you want to control exactly what Call-to-Actions are showcased, click Custom. Then select + Add an Action.

Now, you can choose what you want to link the action to:

  • None (Helpful for a placeholder, but don't forget about it!)
  • A page on your Nucleus website
  • A specific Flow
  • Your PrayerFlow or Prayer Hub
  • An external URL
  • An email address
  • A phone number

Each type of action will require some additional information to set up. (For instance, if you choose to link to an email, you'll need to type in the email address you want people to send a message to.)

Enter some short text for the button and then select the button style: Primary or Secondary. Then, click Add New Action.

When you have multiple Call-to-Actions, you can reorder them by clicking on the two lines of a CTA and dragging it up/down to your desired position.

Helper Text + Link(s)

As a last little bit of helpful information and/or links, you can add a short message at the bottom of your "Thank You" page. As an example, we provide the following text:

Have a question or need help with anything? We're here for you.

{{ churchEmailAddress }}

Where {{ churchEmailAddress }} will automatically fill in with your church's email address that's listed in your church's Profile in your Church Settings here.

While there isn't any character counter in this field, this helper text is meant for any small pieces of information that's helpful. Leave the essay writing for your next book deal 😉

My Account Prompt (Sign in / Sign up)

Nucleus is very keen on prompting people to sign in or sign up for a personal My Nucleus account. Not only does this benefit the person submitting a Flow so they can keep track of any previous submissions - whether from a custom Flow, your church's PrayerFlow, or your GivingFlow - but they can also manage any profile information and saved payment information.

It also helps you as an admin in your Dashboard to more accurately keep track of people records associated with each submission.

While we highly recommend to keep this prompt on in most cases, we recognize some instances might benefit from not prompting people to sign in / sign up, such as a Connect Card or a Plan A Visit Flow. To learn more about setting up Guest Mode for a Flow, click here.

Nucleus provides some clear text for both the title and message, but feel free to customize this messaging.

Lastly, once you're happy with your edits, click Save Changes at the bottom of the page. Then, you can preview your changes by scrolling up to the top and clicking Preview.

In a new tab, you can test out your Flow and see what your "Thank You" page looks like.

Of course, if you're satisfied with all your edits, don't forget to click Publish Changes in the top right corner.

Customize The "Thank You" Page - External URL

In certain instances, the Advanced "Thank You" Page might not be enough. Instead of keeping people on your church's website with The Launcher open at their fingertips, you can redirect people to an external URL. Perhaps there's a specific video you want them to see after completing a Flow. Or perhaps there's too much additional information after completing a Flow that you can't convey in the Advanced "Thank You" Page.

Whatever the case, you can easily redirect people after completing a Flow.

While on the Create option in the left sidebar of a Flow, select Thank You Page. Then choose External URL.

First, enter in the entire URL that you want people to be taken to. Then select whether this should force open a new tab (leaving them with easy access to go back and forth between your church's website and this other page) or remain in the same tab they're currently in.

Note: Make sure to include the appropriate http:// or https:// for the URL. It's best to simply copy the entire URL from the address bar of your browser.

Below this, you can edit the Confirmation Title & Message. This will showcase in the Flow if there is a delay in redirecting someone to the external URL, or if there is a complete failure to redirect them. That way they can confirm that their submission was successful and choose to manually click on the link to take them to the desire external URL.

Once you're satisfied with your edits, click the Save Changes button at the bottom of the page. Then, you can preview your changes by scrolling up to the top and clicking Preview.

In a new tab, you can test out your Flow and see how responsive the redirect is and what someone would experience if they were to submit that Flow.

Of course, if you're satisfied with all your edits, don't forget to click Publish Changes in the top right corner.

Customize The Receipt Email

To edit the receipt email, while managing a particular Flow, and while on the Create option in the left sidebar, click on Receipt Email.

First, you can choose whether you want Nucleus to send a receipt email. Simply click the toggle button to do that. (By default, any Flow you create will have this option turned on.)

Below this, you can customize the "From" name and the "Reply-To" email address.

By default, Nucleus will use the information for both of these from your church's basic profile information here in your Church Settings.

To override the "From" name and "Reply-To" email address, simply type in each field.

Note: Changing the "Reply-To" email means that when someone clicks to reply to that email, their email provider will automatically have that email address populated in the "To" field.

By default, aside from basic information regarding the person's submission, there is no additional message from your church on that email. (See an example of this above.)

Adding a custom message is a nice touch to make it feel like a personal email from your church. Type in any message in 500 characters or under to add a custom message.

This message will appear at the top of the email, so it will be the first thing someone sees when they open their receipt email.

Any changes you make to your Flow, you can save without publishing them. So don't forget, if you want your changes to be made live, to click the Save Changes button and the Publish Changes button.

Otherwise, you can save your changes and click the Preview button to test out your changes without making them live.

Enable A Follow-Up Email (Within Flows)

When adding a short message in the Receipt Email isn't quite enough, you can bolster a Flow's follow-up sequence by enabling an additional email to send when someone completes a Flow (and includes their email address, of course 😁)

Note: Click here to go back and review how to add a custom message to your Receipt Email.

A follow-up email helps create a greater connection with people - especially if it's their first time submitting a Flow to your church - and is a perfect way to provide additional details that couldn't fit within your Flow's "Thank You" page.

To do this, while managing a Flow, click on Messages in the left sidebar. Then toggle the Enabled switch to the "on" position.

Below this, you can customize the "From" name and the "Reply-To" email address. By default, Nucleus will use your church's name and main email address, pulling from your church's Profile information in your Church Settings here.

Next, you can add your email's Subject, Headline, and Primary Message. (Keep note of the character limit for each.)

Below this, you can add an optional secondary set of messaging.

Lastly, you can add a single Call-to-Action button to end your email with. Simply add a small title to your button and then paste the exact URL below that.

Note: Make sure to include the appropriate http:// or https:// for the URL. It's best to simply copy the entire URL from the address bar of your browser.

Note: This is a great way to continue people's next step journey for the particular Flow they filled out or for other next step opportunities! Try using this button to lead people to take another step in your Launcher by pasting a trigger link for particular Flow. Click here to learn how to find that.

Once you're satisfied with your edits, click the Save Changes button at the bottom of the page.

To preview your follow-up email, you'll need to send a test submission through your Flow. You can do this by clicking Preview at the top of the page.

Once you complete the Flow (making sure you've input your email address), go to your email inbox and wait for the follow-up email. (It should show up a few minutes after you receive the Receipt Email.)

Below is an example of what the follow-up email will look like.

Create A Follow-Up Message Campaign (With Nucleus Messages)

If you're looking for a more robust follow-up message sequence for people who submit a specific Flow, you might want to consider creating a Campaign in Nucleus Messages.

While you can send a single follow-up message directly from Nucleus Flows, Nucleus Messages allows you to send multiple (technically unlimited, though please don't abuse this 😅) emails to people to complete a Flow.

We have an entire section in our Help Center dedicated to Nucleus Messages, but let's review how to get a Campaign off the ground with an Audience pulling from a Flow.

First, click on the Nucleus symbol in the top left corner and click on People. Then select Messages from the top menu.

Next, click the + Add New button.

Give your Campaign a name (which you can always rename later on), and click Save Changes.

You'll then be prompted to create your Audience. Click Begin Setup.

Select a Dynamic Audience and then choose to populate using a Flow. Next, choose the Flow from the dropdown menu, and then click Save Changes.

Note: You'll notice the number of people that currently match your Audience below. If no one has submitted this Flow yet, your number will be 0.

After that, you'll be taken to your Audience. If people have previously already completed this Flow, they will appear in this list. And going forward, anytime someone fills out this Flow, they will be added to this Audience.

Now that your Audience is established, you're all set to begin creating your Campaign of emails to be delivered to anyone who submits that particular Flow. To get started, click on Emails in the left sidebar.

Here, you can set up three different types of emails:

  • One-Offs or Scheduled (to send on specific dates at specific times)
  • Automated Sequences (to send all emails with specific amount of days between each one)
  • A Welcome Email (an initial email to introduce someone to the Campaign)

Because there is so much more that can be said about setting up your Campaign, we have several other visual guides specific to Nucleus Messages that will help you maximize the efficacy of your follow-up sequence for a Flow 😎 Click here to view those.

Set Up Guest Mode (Advanced)

By default for any Flow, when someone submits a Flow and provides at least their email address, Nucleus will create a person record in your Nucleus church account.

After that, Nucleus will automatically send them an email to verify their address. Additionally, if they didn't create a password at the end of the Flow they submitted, Nucleus will send an additional email to prompt them to finish setting up their account by creating a password.

While in many cases, it can be advantageous for these prompts to be sent, and for people records to be created, sometimes it might make sense to toggle these processes off.

For example, if someone fills out a Plan A Visit Flow, that doesn't mean they will join your church and want a personal Nucleus account created for them. Or if someone fills out a Contact Us Flow, that might be the only time they reach out to contact you, making it unnecessary for a person record to clutter up your people database.

To set up Guest Mode, while managing your Flow, click on People Records.

Then select Don't create (guest mode)

Carefully read through all of the information shown just to double check that enabling Guest Mode on this particular Flow makes sense. If you're set on turning on Guest Mode, click Save Changes.

Note: You can still use the Smart Contact step in a Flow even while Guest Mode is enabled. If someone fills out the Flow while signed out of The Launcher, a person record will not be created, but you will still receive their contact information. On the other hand, if someone fills out the Flow while signed into The Launcher, the submission will still be associated with their already-created person record. So it's the best of both worlds!

Lastly, if you're enabling Guest Mode on a Flow, you likely don't want to showcase any prompt to sign in or to create an account at the end of the Flow. In that case, you'll want to click on the Thank You Page tab and turn on the Advanced mode.

To learn all about the various options and customizations with the Advanced Thank You Page, click here to scroll back up.

While there are several ways to customize your "Thank You" Page, the most important thing to do here is to toggle off the My Account Prompt option. That way no one is prompted to sign in or sign up for a personal Nucleus account (and thereby have a person record created in your people database).

Once you do that, scroll down and click Save Changes.

Note: Enabling Guest Mode only affects that specific Flow. It does not remove the Sign In button in the top right corner of The Launcher.

What Next?

Building a Flow might seem daunting, but don't worry! If you stick with simple Flows to start, you'll soon get the hang of it and be able to make more complex Flows that might even have Limits and Conditional Logic set up! 😎 For now, let's continue on our journey in creating a Flow.
