Set Up Connection Types
Ever been stuck wondering what label to put on a relationship? It can be pretty awkward. No one likes that kind of ambiguity. Having defined relationships can create security and provide context for what types of conversations you have.
The same goes with Connection Types in Nucleus. Connection Types are an integral construct that helps ensure messages get to the right people, and access to certain areas of your Nucleus remain secure.
Connection Types are manually added by an admin to each person's profile in your Nucleus to help denote what type of relationship each person has with your church.
Connection types power these two key features:
- Smart “Connection” People Lists
- Privacy Controls
Because these features are embedded in almost every aspect of Nucleus, you'll want to ensure you set this up before you move onto all the other exciting things we know you're dying to dive into 😎

Set Up Your Connection Types
Because Connection Types are so integral to Nucleus and aren't just relegated to a single product, setting up and managing Connection Types can be done in your overall Church Settings. Let's quickly get yours set up.
- Go to your Church Settings.
- Click on Church Info.
- Then Connection Types.
You'll notice there are three Connection Types already listed by default:
- Visitors
- Members
- Regular Attenders
You can rename these, delete them, or view who's included in each list (i.e. whose profile has that specific Connection Type set as their relationship with your church).
To edit a Connection Type, click the drop down arrow beside the Connection Type you want to edit. Then click, Edit Connection.
The field will now become editable. You can change the name, and add a brief description if you want!
Don't forget to Save your Changes!
You can also add other Connection Types if there are other types of relationships you can think of that would be beneficial to include.
Note: People can only be added to one Connection Type list, so keeping your Connection Types as generic as possible will be the most helpful way to utilize this feature.
Note: There are other custom lists you can create and add more than one to a single profile. Connection Types describe the overarching relationship people have with your church, which is why you can only be added to one of those types.

Common Places To See This In Action
When you add a Connection Type to a person, they are added to a list of all others with that specific Connection Type. These lists ensure better privacy controls and better targeted communication strategies for your church.
Here are three common examples where you might see this at work:
1. Your Prayer Wall
When trying to access your Prayer Wall to see prayers that have been shared by other people in your church, only those with a specific Connection Type can view those prayers. This helps ensure privacy and lets you control who gets to see those "public" prayer requests.
2. A Custom Flow
When creating a custom Flow, you can edit the privacy controls to ensure only those with specific Connection Types (can be just one or multiple) can access that Flow. This can be helpful when needing to only allow a certain group within your church to complete a Flow, such as member surveys or other private/gated registrations.
3. Nucleus Web
When creating any page on Nucleus Web, there are privacy controls that allow you to set a page to Public, Hidden, or Private. When set to Private, you can choose which Connection Types people must have on their profile in order to view that content. Then, when a visitor to that page logins they will either be able to view that content (meaning their Connection Type matches the requirement set by you) or they will see an Unauthorized message. This can be helpful for creating pages you only want members of your church to be able to view.
4. An Email Campaign
When starting an email campaign in Nucleus People, you can create an audience based on a specific Connection Type. This means you can target a specific group of people based on their Connection Type to receive emails that are appropriate for them to receive, but maybe not others, based on their relationship they have with your church.
Privacy
One of the main benefits to utilizing Connection Types is privacy. Whether it's ensuring only specific people are able to access certain information (like prayer requests), to submit certain Flows, or to receive certain messages, Connection Types ensures privacy is baked into Nucleus.
