Manage Your Audience & Subscribers (In A Campaign)
Whenever you first create and start a Campaign, you always establish an Audience. If you need to revisit your Subscribers and check who’s part of your Audience, or you need to manually add other people, this article’s for you.
To begin, go to your Nucleus Messages, and then select Campaigns. Click here for a quick link. Next, click on the campaign to View the one you want to add emails to. And lastly, select Audience in the left sidebar.
In this guide, we'll cover the following topics. Click on any one to jump ahead.
- Review Your Audience
- Unsubscribe/Resubscribe Someone From/To Your Campaign
- Manually Add Someone To Your Campaign
- Bulk Add Subscribers To Your Campaign
Review Your Audience
Once you’re viewing your Audience, you can see every Subscriber in your Campaign, including:
- Their email address
- Their name (if available)
- Their status (active/inactive)
- How many emails they’ve received from this Campaign
- How they were added to the Audience (manual/auto)
If someone is listed as Active, this means they will continue to receive emails from this Campaign. If they are listed as Inactive, this means either they chose to unsubscribe themselves from receiving any future emails, or an admin has manually unsubscribed them.
If someone was added manually, this means an admin chose to add to the Audience. If someone was automatically added, this means that person matched a particular rule when the Campaign was initially created (either from a Fixed or Dynamic Audience).
You can always click the Refresh button to make sure you’re seeing the most up-to-date list of Subscribers if you believe there has recently been a change in who is added or subscribed to your Campaign.
Unsubscribe/Resubscribe Someone From/To Your Campaign
If you receive a request from someone to unsubscribe them from a particular Campaign, you can easily do so from within the Campaign’s Audience.
Simply find them in the list of Subscribers, and click the Unsubscribe button. Once unsubscribed, a person will no longer receive any future emails from this particular Campaign. (But don’t worry, if they’re subscribed to other Campaigns, they will still receive those emails as long as they remain subscribed.)
If you manually unsubscribe someone, you have the ability to click the Resubscribe button. They will be added right away back into receiving any future messages from your Campaign.
Now, at the bottom of every email, there will always be a button to unsubscribe from the campaign.
As soon as someone clicks on it, they will be taken to a page where they will need to confirm their choice to unsubscribe. (This prevents any accidental unsubscribing.)
Once they do this, they will still appear in your Audience, but they will show as now being unsubscribed. (It can take a couple of days before their subscription status is updated in your Audience.)
If someone accidentally unsubscribes themselves from a Campaign (or changes their mind in the future) and they still have access to the same email they unsubscribed from, they can always return back to that email and click the Unsubscribe link again. This will allow them to resubscribe themselves back to the Campaign.
Most times, people will delete the email they clicked to unsubscribe from, though. Should someone reach out to you and request that you resubscribe them, you can click the Resubscribe button. In this instance, they will be sent an email presenting them with the option to resubscribe. (Since they were the ones who originally opted out of receiving the emails, they will need to be the ones to opt themselves back in.) Once they click the button in that email to resubscribe, then they will receive all future messages from your Campaign.
Sometimes when you click to resubscribe someone, you will not be able to do so right away. This means that this person has recently marked one of your emails as spam, and there is now a "cooldown" period before you are allowed to send them the resubscribe email. Depending on how long ago they marked the previous email as spam will determine how long you need to wait, but Nucleus will do the math for you and let you know when you can come back to amend this 😎
However, if someone chooses to unsubscribe themselves from the Campaign by clicking on the unsubscribe link in an email from your Campaign, you will not be able to resubscribe them. This is to protect people from continually receiving messages that they don’t want or are not pertinent to them, and to protect your account from being marked as spam, which could lead to blocking emails from you permanently.
Ultimately, the goal is to curate an Audience where the majority of people want to be subscribed to the emails you’re sending. So just be mindful when initially creating your Audience so as to ensure a low rate of unsubscribe (or spam report) clicks. Too many of those can harm your sending reputation, and slow down or stop your sending rate, so it’s important for everyone that you maintain a healthy list 🙂
Note: Too many bounced emails as well - meaning the emails you input are invalid or incorrect - can potentially cause Nucleus to automatically pause your Campaign. In those instances, you will need to reach out to the Customer Success Team to assess your Campaign and restart it after making recommendations to you.
Manually Add Someone To Your Campaign
If you ever need to manually add someone else to your Campaign (perhaps they weren’t included in the original list of Subscribers, or they have a different email address at which they want to receive your emails), you can do so in just a couple of clicks!
Just start by clicking the + Add New button in the Audience section of your email campaign. Select Add Individual and then add their email address, first & last name. Once you're done that, simply save your changes and you'll be all set 😎
Note: Only the email is required, but first/last name is super helpful for managing your Audience, as well as if you’re using Smart Data in any emails, to be able to pull that information directly into the email to personalize each email with their name in it.
Bulk Add Subscribers To Your Campaign
Perhaps you have a list of email addresses from another campaign manager (like Mailchimp or another ChMS) and want to quickly add them to your Campaign in Nucleus. Or, perhaps you collected a list of emails from a signup form and you need to add their emails to a previously existing Campaign. You can easily do this by manually adding them to your Audience all at once.
As mentioned when manually adding emails above, simply select the + Add New button and the click Add in Bulk.
You'll notice that there are a couple of different formats in which you can add Subscribers here:
With Commas
Nucleus can interpret data in the field by separating each person with a comma. For example:
Jimmy Baker jimmy.b@fakemail.com, lori.lorelle@fakemail.com, Brenda brenda.baxter@fakemail.com,
Notice how, even though some people have a first and last name, only first name, or none at all, each Subscriber has a comma separating them.
With Line Breaks
In a similar way, Nucleus can interpret data in the field by separating each person with a new line break. For example:
Jimmy Baker jimmy.b@fakemail.com
lori.lorelle@fakemail.com
Brenda brenda.baxter@fakemail.com
Again, even though some people have a first and last name, only first name, or none at all, each Subscriber is separated by a hard line break.
Paste Directly From A Spreadsheet
If you have a spreadsheet with all your contact information in it, you can paste that data directly into the Add in bulk field. Simply make sure your spreadsheet columns are in one of the following orders:
Email Address | First Name | Last Name
First Name | Last Name | Email Address
If you don’t have a Last Name column, that’s okay. Or if you only have partial data (first name and email address, but no last name; or email address, but no first or last name), that’s also okay! Nucleus will be able to interpret the pasted data to ensure everything matches up the way it’s supposed to.
Once your spreadsheet is ready to go, simply highlight all the cells and copy that data. Then, paste it in the Add in bulk field.
Each person should be separated by a hard line break.
Note: In some cases, Nucleus will be unable to interpret the data you enter into the field. For instance, if anyone in your spreadsheet is listed as two people, such as spouses, Nucleus cannot interpret data where a First Name column contains more than one name. So if, for example, Josh & Brenda exist in the First Name column, you will need to choose either Josh’s or Brenda’s name only to use as the Subscriber.
As long as no errors exist, click the Save Changes button to add all your new Subscribers to your Audience. You might notice that the number of Subscribers added and the number you pasted in don’t match. Often this is because there were duplicates detected or some Subscribers already existed in the Campaign. This is usually easy to see in your list and Nucleus will highlight this information for you right below the bulk entry field before you add people to the list.
